In the first ODI of the five match Natwest Series between England and South Africa had taken place at Headingley in which England won the match by 20 runs. After winning the toss England elected to bat first. It was superb opening partnership between Bell and Prior who gave a solid start to the England innings. But the run rate was below four runs per over until the 35th over. After that the two giants of the England team namely Pietersen and Flintoff batted sensibly throughout the innings and their 158 run partnership marked England to score a total of 275 runs in 50 overs. Flintoff-78 and Pietersen-90* were the top scorers for England. Then while chasing, South Africa started smoothly with some good batting performance and the wickets were also falling at regular intervals and the South Africans were all out for 255.Finally England won the match by 20 runs. Kallis was the top scorer with 52 runs. Piteresen chipped in with two wickets and a crucial run out of Kallis that won him the man of the match award for his good all round performance.England really deserved this victory and hope they will continue this run in the coming matches and all English fans will be hoping for a series victory at their home.
